Oh well. I did see a graphic on ESPN this morning that the last Met manager to win his debut was Jeff Torborg, and we all remember how well that went.
One thing I thought was interesting was Manuel's statement in his press conference that he would have reminded the players of the collapse in spring training, to use it as something to build on. Interesting idea, and a good one, I think. The notion that the collapse could be "put in the past" was really sort of illogical, really. It probably would have been smart(in hindsight, obviously) to maybe focus on it at least a little bit. Use it as motivation.
And you know what, while I admit that the firing of Willie was botched by the Mets, I think this focus(especially on ESPN) on 3:15 a.m. is ridiculous and misleading. It was 3:15 a.m. EASTERN TIME. They were on the WEST COAST ! They met after the game at the hotel. So, it was actually 12:15 a.m. It's a small point, but they are really hammering on it, and it really just isn't true.
It will be interesting to see what happens from here on out.
